Jean Souviron

Jean Souviron is an architect (Ensa Paris-Est, 2013), a civil engineer (ENPC, 2016) and holds a doctorate in the art of building and urban planning (Université libre de Bruxelles, 2022).

He joined Ensa Paris-Est in September 2024 as Senior Lecturer in Theory and Practice of Architectural and Urban Design (TPCAU). He succeeds Jean-François Blassel as director of the DPEA Architecture Post-Carbone program, which he is renewing through a pedagogical project that strengthens links with research. The main aim of this post-graduate program is to help students develop critical and operational thinking on energy, climate and environmental issues relating to architecture.

Jean Souviron is also involved in bachelor's and master's degree courses, where his teaching focuses on architecture through the techniques, physical phenomena and social practices involved in the construction of interior climates, with a broader perspective on the challenges of climate change and ecological upheaval. These themes are also at the heart of his research into twentieth-century construction techniques and the way they have helped shape societies' relationship with their environment, as well as their expectations in terms of comfort. In particular, he examines the ecological, social and architectural impact of energy and industrial policies by tracing the trajectory of building materials and products such as insulating glass, combining the history of architecture and techniques, environmental humanities and territorial ecology.

A member of OCS and Ipraus (UMR AUSser), Jean Souviron is also a visiting researcher at the Collegium Helveticum in Zurich, where he continues his work in collaboration with the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta) and the Sustainable Construction Chair at ETHZ. He is also a member of the editorial board of Cahiers de la recherche architecturale, urbaine et paysagère (Craup).

Before joining Ensa Paris-Est, Jean Souviron taught at the Université libre de Bruxelles (2018-2022) and Ensa de Paris-Belleville (2022-2024). He was an associate member of the Mission régionale d'autorité environnementale d'Île-de-France (2022-2024) and, with Raphaël Ménard, curated the Énergies légères exhibition at the Pavillon de l'Arsenal (Nov. 2023-March 2024).

As an architect-engineer, he is involved in project practice (Bureau Bas Smets, 2012), facade engineering and bioclimatic design (Transsolar, Leicht, Elioth, 2015-2017), before undertaking collaborations as a freelancer, such as with Atelier Julien Boidot on the project to rehabilitate and extend a school complex in Guécélard (RIBA International Award for Excellence).
