Structure and architecture

Part of our "Elements, Structure & Architecture" master's program, the "Structure and Architecture" curriculum, run jointly with École des Ponts ParisTech, aims to introduce architects to the world of engineering, and vice versa. In this way, it helps to break down the barriers between the worlds of engineers and architects, and provides students with a solid grounding in structural engineering as applied to architecture.

    Presentation

The course, offered within the Elements, Structure & Architecture program, is directed by Jean-Marc Weill. Each year, it welcomes around fifteen engineering and architecture students. It provides architecture students with an introduction to structural and material calculations for simple cases, and engineering students with high-level scientific training and a basic culture of architecture. This is an undeniable added value for their professional careers.

    Organization

Student architects follow a customized four-semester program, combining courses from both schools. They are exempt from a certain number of courses, as their training program incorporates specific courses and seminars from École des Ponts, designed to introduce them to the technical aspects of structures, raise their awareness and train them. This "ad hoc" training is underpinned by a refresher course in mathematics and mechanics provided exclusively for student architects by École des Ponts. This pedagogical organization, which allows student-architects and student-engineers to learn to work together, enables them to compare and contrast their respective approaches and cultures.

    Admission

The program is open only to students enrolled in Licence 3, who are in the process of acquiring the Diplôme d'études en Architecture (DEEA), or who already hold the DEEA and are entering the Master's program for the first time. Selection is based on a portfolio of work and an oral interview.

    And after

Architects wishing to enroll in a degree program at École des Ponts ParisTech must commit to a further three years of study to obtain their engineering diploma. An initial selection based on an application and an interview at École des Ponts are organized to enroll in a scientific course at UPEM. At the end of this year, students are selected to enroll at École des Ponts for a PFE ingénieur.
Engineering students wishing to pursue a degree program at the École des Ponts submit an application (VA) for entry into the Master's program.
