A conversation between Deborah Feldman, author, and Anna Rosellini, professor and chair of the research committee

Madame Vauquer, the widow who ‘shuffles about in her slippers, preceded by her cat’ in Balzac’s Le Père Goriot, embodies a figure one might consider outdated: the landlady. In Paris, around seven thousand private rooms fulfil Airbnb’s original promise: to welcome a stranger into one’s home. This sample and their hosts, the vast majority of whom are women, offer the chance to immerse oneself in a world that highlights the points of contact created by the penetration of a digital platform, its codes and customs, into the physical world of domestic life. Over the course of nights spent immersing myself with these Airbnb hosts, the landladies of the digital age, a new relationship between intimacy and otherness begins to take shape.
