"America’s First Trombe Wall"
The Kelbaugh House (1974-1975) and the New Environmental Agenda of Solar TechnologiesIn 1984, ten years after its construction, the Kelbaugh House was described as the most publicized solar house in the US. By appearing in international architectural journals along with local and national newspapers, this project and the story of its designer came to embody architecture’s promises of an alternative future, in the wake of the 1973 oil crisis and the rise of environmental concerns. But it also marked a profound shift in regards to the geographies and the goals previously assigned to solar technologies: prior to its importation into the US, the solar heating device implemented in the Kelbaugh House had been developed in the context of late colonization and postwar modernization, between France and North Africa.
